Ausangate
The four-day Ausangate Trek to Rainbow Mountain is an amazing experience. See the vibrant Rainbow Mountain, one of Peru’s most visited sites, on the first day. Hike past Southern Peru’s highest and holiest summit, Mount Ausangate. The Andean people, who still make yearly pilgrimages to its icy slopes, have made it a focal point of their religious beliefs for millennia. For experienced hikers who enjoy a genuine outdoor adventure, this is an amazing excursion with breathtaking glacial views, unspoiled beauty, and seclusion.
Day 01: Cusco – Upis Village – Upis Camp
Day 02: Upis – Arapa Pass – Pukacocha Camp
Day 03: Pukacocha – Warmisaya Pass – Comercocha Camp
Day 04: Comercocha – Rainbow Mountain – Red Valley — Cusco
Our native guide will pick you up from your Cusco hotel at 5:30 am to start our 4-day hike from Ausangate to the 7 Colors Mountain. We will then go to the trailhead by car for about three and a half hours. We will travel through charming communities on our journey. Following around three hours of driving, we will pause at the Tinki town (3815 m/12516 ft) to use the restroom and make a purchase that we neglected to do in Cusco. To get to the trailhead, we will next drive for another half hour on a gravel road. Our time at the trailhead, Upis Village (4,150 m/ 13,615 ft), will allow us to arrange our duffel bags and backpacks. The members of our crew who will accompany you on the Ausangate Trek will be introduced to you by our guide. We start our journey on a short path that meanders past corn and potato fields in the Andes. The hike’s first three hours travel over a hilly plain, passing several streams and rising slightly, where you can view rows of Andean homes constructed like their forefathers did. We may spot some Andean geese flapping in the wind as we stroll across the green mountain valley. We also pass by little ponds, which are ideal duck habitat. We will reach the picturesque location for lunch and our campground, which is surrounded by the Ausangate mountain (6,389 m/ 20,961 ft), after more than three hours of climbing. We will have free time to relax or explore the camp once we arrive, and then we will have supper and happy hour.

To get ready for the second thrilling day, we will begin this day with hot beverages in our tent and then have a freshly made breakfast. Following breakfast, we’ll start our hike to the first pass of Arapa (4,800 m/15,748 ft) via a stunning green high mountain valley and along a winding road that offers breathtaking views of Ausangate summit. With its enormous needle-shaped peaks, the Vilcanota mountain range will be breathtakingly visible from the pass. With any luck, we could spot Andean condors, chinchillas, and wild vicuñas grazing freely in the area.
We will stroll downwards to our lunch place, which is in a beautiful setting close to the Yanacocha glacial lake with the snow-capped Ausangate mountain as a striking background, after spending some time at the highest pass. Following lunch, we travel over the highland plain to the second camp, Pukacocha (4,600 m/15,088 ft), which is situated amid glacial lakes at the base of Ausangate’s western icefall. After afternoon tea, we shall have supper in the evening.

As we traverse the most picturesque section of this four-day Ausangate Trek to the Montaña de Colores, today’s climb will be quite remarkable. Following a hearty breakfast, we will begin our ascent up the steep, winding route to the second crossing, Pukacocha crossing (5,000m/16,404ft). Once we reach the pass, we will have a unique vantage point from which to gaze down over the reddish slopes of the highlands with their vibrant mountains and unspoiled nature, as well as the snow-capped mountains extending in all directions and the lagoons created by melting glaciers. Following this pass, the trail descends to the valley side, where we will witness numerous alpacas and llamas grazing unhindered. We will continue to traverse the valley to arrive at the lunch stop at Ananta (4,650m/15,256ft), which is situated in a highland valley with breathtaking views everywhere and more llamas grazing close by. Following lunch, we hike for two more hours upward to the next crossing, Warmisaya crossing, which is 5,000 meters (16,404 feet) above sea level. From this pass, we will get our first, more distant, and breathtaking views of the famous Rainbow Mountain. In order to get to the second camp at Comercocha (4,680 m / 15,354 ft), we will walk the final 30 to 45 minutes downhill after admiring the scenery and taking some photos. Since we have an early morning the next day to explore the amazing Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain, we will have dinner and afternoon tea at the camp before going to bed.

Now that the most significant day has come, we will be ready to see the colors of the Red Valley and the famous Rainbow Mountain thanks to a delicious, freshly made breakfast. The muleteers will then give us a quick farewell as our transport will be coming to our final camp to get our gear. To get to Rainbow Mountain, we will then trek for one hour and thirty minutes. After we get there, we’ll have plenty of time to take in this special location, which is in the high, isolated Andes of Peru. After taking in the breathtaking hues of Rainbow Mountain, we will spend forty-five minutes in the Red Valley, another remarkable location that not many hikers visit. Here, we will be enthralled by the intriguing hues of the reddish valleys and hills with reddish stripes. We have two more hours to trek across this valley until the trail’s conclusion. At last, we will reach our lunch location for our final meal that our chef has prepared. After that, we’ll head back to your Cusco hotel. The adventure is over.
