Your journey begins with an early morning departure from Cusco. After a scenic drive through picturesque Andean villages, you’ll arrive at Mollepata for a hearty breakfast. The trek starts with a gentle climb towards Soraypampa, surrounded by breathtaking views of the snow-capped Humantay and Salkantay mountains. Upon arrival, you’ll set up camp and have the option to hike up to the stunning Humantay Lake, a turquoise glacial lake nestled at the base of Humantay Mountain.

Day two is considered the most challenging yet rewarding day of the trek. An early start takes you up to the Salkantay Pass, the highest point of the trek at 4,650 meters. After soaking in the scenery, you’ll descend into the cloud forest, passing waterfalls and diverse flora along the way, before arriving at Chaullay.

On the third day, the trail leads through lush jungle terrain. You’ll witness coffee plantations, vibrant orchids, and exotic birds as you follow the trail along the Santa Teresa River. Today’s trek takes you through the ancient Inca trail leading to the Llactapata archaeological site. From here, you’ll enjoy a breathtaking view of Machu Picchu in the distance. The trail then descends to the hydroelectric station, where you’ll board a train to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu.

The final day is dedicated to exploring the iconic citadel of Machu Picchu. An early morning bus ride takes you to the entrance, where you’ll have a guided tour of the archaeological site. Learn about the history, architecture, and significance of this UNESCO World Heritage site before enjoying some free time to explore on your own. In the afternoon, you’ll return to Cusco by train.

The best time for the Salkantay Trek is during the dry season, from April to October. Clear skies, stunning views, and more stable weather conditions make this period ideal for trekking.
